The history of the Buol region is one of
small kingdoms that entered into treaties with each other as the
need arose. The Buol
are similar to the Gorontolo people in their culture and
language. The Minado
area close to the Buol has many Christians, but the Buol remain
strongly Muslim. The
Christians in the area are afraid to be bold in their witness
because of persecution so the Buol people have not been
They make their living by farming rice,
maize, sago, yams and grain and coconut.
They also fish.
Their marriages are usually arranged and a bride-price is
paid by the groom.
The couple usually lives with the bride’s family until the first
child arrives then the couple establishes their own household.
Although they follow Islam they still have some animistic
beliefs. They still
believe in spirits and believe they inhabit places.
They use dukuns (witchdoctors) in sickness and in dealing
with spirits. It is
difficult to get to the area where the Buol live by road so boat
is usually used.
This makes them more isolated.
They live in northwest Sulawesi in the Toli-Toli regency which borders
the Gorontalo province.

Holy Spirit to develop friendships with these people and to
pray for them with signs following.

the stronghold of Islam will be broken and they will have
freedom to believe in Jesus.

indigenous church will be planted among the Buol.
