Anti-western and anti-Christian feelings run deep in the politics
of post-colonial Malaysia. Islam is the official state religion, but only 55% of the
people are Muslims. It is illegal to proselytize Muslims, but great effort is being
expended to induce all non-Muslims to convert to Islam. Nevertheless, Christianity
is growing, and the desire of the people to prosper and have all the trappings of the West
largely defeats the anti-western rhetoric of the leaders.
Malaysians are somewhat used to not having freedom, and until
recently never dared to speak up about anything. However, the last year has seen
changes begin as the prosperity and good life promised by the government has evaporated
with the Asian financial crisis. All hope in this or the next life apart from hope
in Jesus Christ is futile. The lie is being exposed, and the door of opportunity is
opening. Malaysia is actually an "easy" country to live and work in.
Who will go?
Our prayer for Malaysia: "Our heavenly Father, You set
the peoples of Malaysia in place, gave them unique languages and cultures, but most of all
You sent a Savior to deliver them from sin and slavery to the kingdoms of Satan and of
this world. Millions of them are still bound up because they haven't received the
good news, haven't believed it, haven't accepted Jesus as their Lord. Can't we do
more about that now? Won't You pour out Your Spirit on the peoples of Malaysia?
"Jesus, You didn't tell us to pray for much, but You did
instruct us to pray to the Lord of the Harvest to send workers into the fields.
Please, Lord, send more workers to Malaysia. Raise up national workers too, make
Your church powerful and bold. Send the Holy Spirit to do His work of conviction so
that many new churches can be planted and prepare the Malaysian people for Your
coming. Thank You, Lord. You do all things well. We pray today for
Malaysia, in Your Name. Amen."
