The
Bengali people in Thailand generally are immigrants from the Bengal areas
of Bangladesh and India. They come to Thailand looking for a better
life, hoping to escape some of the poverty and hopelessness in their
homeland areas. A lot of Bengali have good educations and hold
professional positions in the cities, but some still live and work in
rural areas.
In Thailand there are about 35,000
Bengali living in both rural areas and as professionals in the
cities. Their religion is about
mostly Islam with significant numbers of Hindus.
The Bengali in Thailand are mostly
Muslims coming from the Bengal areas of Bangladesh, but many Hindus from
India are in Thailand. There is some mixing of the two, and even
Muslim Bengalis will follow some festivals and Hindu events.
At this time there are a few
Bengali Christians scattered among the Bengali in Thailand, but no Bengali
churches and no known outreaches for the last few years. No known
church planting teams or even church planters are working to reach them.
There are some resources such as the Bengali bible and The Jesus Film.
Pray that the Lord of the Harvest
raises up and sends workers to the Bengali. Pray for the churches
in Thailand to get a heart to reach them. Pray for an outpouring of
God's Holy Spirit that will bring revelation to the Bengali. Pray
for professional relationships to develop into redemptive events.
Pray the the young generation can escape some of the bondage of the
traditions and be free to hear, believe, and follow the gospel of Jesus.
