BRUNEI PEOPLE of MALAYSIA

Brunei is in the capital, Brunei-Muara District, and the coastal strip. Kedayan is in West Brunei-Muara District and Tutong District. Also spoken in Malaysia (Sabah).

In Malaysia the dialect variations are regional, not ethnic. 73% to 80% lexical similarity with Standard Malay. Bilingualism in Malay. All ages. The de facto national dialect. Very vigorous use. Brunei is used by those in Bandar Seri Begawan and surroundings, and by young people, and educated older people from different language or dialect backgrounds. Brunei and Kadayan are both recognized by the government as indigenous groups. 'Orang Bukit' is the name of the people. Investigation needed: bilingual proficiency, attitudes toward Malay. Kadayan: agriculturalists, Kampong Ayer: fishermen and craftsmen in Water Village. Muslim.

Also spoken in Malaysia with the population of 54,000 (46,500 in Sabah, 7,500 in Sarawak).
