Singapore
Singapore is a small country,
actually a city-state, made up of one larger island and about 55 smaller
islands with a population of less than 5 million people. Founded by Lord Raffles for the British in 1819,
Singapore was intended to be the commercial and shipping hub for all of
South East Asia. What was envisioned has come to pass, and today
Singapore stands out as the major commercial
center
for all of South East Asia. No other city in the region is as
clean or safe as Singapore, and none can compare to the wealth and
prosperity of Singapore.
In 1963, Singapore was given
independence and after two years of being part of Malaysia, Singapore
became a country to be built on the principles of hard work, personal
discipline, and self-reliance. The results are impressive.
Singapore has become all that was envisioned by Lord Raffles two hundred
years ago. It is the commercial center of the region.
Today, Singaporeans enjoy freedoms and opportunities not common to their
neighbors in Malaysia and Indonesia. Although there are many laws
and rules, and the enforcement is strict, Singapore enjoys low crime
rates and an orderly daily life. Offcially there is freedom of
religion, although many cultural barriers exist to those wanting to
change their religion.
The Christian Church in Singapore has
enjoyed phenominal growth in the past 45 years, with the Christian
population growing by more than 20 times. 16% of all Singaporeans
are Christian, a high percentage for South East Asia, and 8% of all
Singaporeans are evangelical Christians. The fastest growing
congregations (some over 20,000 strong!) are the pentecostal,
charismatic, and evangelical churches.
The
ever-growing wealth in Singapore has brought the need for common
laborers to do the ordinary work, and today most of the common work is
done by overseas workers and day laborers from nearby Malaysia and
Indonesia. This had created a unique opportunity for Singaporean
Christians to share their faith! There are people living in
Singapore from at least 21 un-reached people groups, many of them are
laborers who could take Jesus back to their own countries.
In
Singapore there are 51 unique people groups. 21 of these groups
are still un-reached people groups with few or no churches in the world.
SEAMIST prays often for 7 of the least reached of these groups in hopes
the Lord will send gospel witnesses and church planters to tell them the
good news. The groups with pray for especially are the 18,000
Baba Chinese Creole, 49,000
Indonesians, 35,000
Japanese,
643,000 Malay,
15,00 Palembang, 23,000
Punjabi,
14,000 Riau Malay.
Please PRAY:
Pray that the Singaporean government and
especially Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will rule wisely and keep
Singapore safe and peaceful so that it can become an even greater
lighthouse of the gospel or Jesus Christ. Pray the the Lord
pours our His Holy Spirit over Singapore and the churches grow in their
burden for missions and for evangelism. Pray that the churches
send out many more evangelists and especially church planters to
neighboring areas. Pray that the Lord sends workers and
resources to the ends of the earth in new ways, using Singapore for His
glory. Pray that the pastors and elders of the churches have
their eyes opened to the great opportunity they have to change the
world, and that they will open thier hearts to using the great wealth of
Singapore to support those who preach the gospel and plant the churches.
